How to Choose the Right Location for Your Proposal

Before we dig into my 10 favorite spots in the city, we first need to cover what exactly you should be looking for in a proposal location. Of course you want it to be scenic (all 10 of our locations will cover this base don’t worry!), but there’s more to it than that! Ideally, a proposal is a reflection of you, your love for one another, and the relationship you’ve built together. Incorporating aspects of what make your relationship unique to the two of you is what can bring your proposal to that next level.

Maybe you two had your first date in downtown Denver and shared your first kiss on Millennium Bridge. Maybe you’re both avid hikers and love to experience Colorado’s nature in all of its glory. Or maybe you two have both been talking about checking out the Botanic Gardens for AGES and still have yet to go. Building your proposal around these kinds of ideas, ones that mean something to you as a couple, is a fantastic way to add even more emotion to an already emotional moment!

My 10 Favorite Locations in Denver for a Proposal

1. Denver Botanic Gardens

First up we have the ever magnificent Denver Botanic Gardens! While a photography permit is required to have your proposal photographed in the gardens, that’s a small price to pay for experiencing one of the most beautiful locations in the heart of downtown Denver! With an enormous array of gardens, some natural to Colorado and others from around the world, the Botanic Gardens offer a ton of variety in terms of proposal locations. It also gives you PLENTY of portrait opportunities for after you pop the question! Lastly, the gardens are beautiful year round, and are even worth experiencing for a proposal when their winter lights are on display as well!

2. City Park

Next on our list of epic proposal locations we have Denver’s City Park, which is just north of the Botanic Gardens! The City Park of Denver not only offers the beautiful and serene atmosphere you’d expect from a park in Colorado, but also views of the city’s skyline which can make for a stunning backdrop for your proposal! The park offers a good variety of settings for your proposal and portraits as well, including multiple historic monuments, two large and beautiful lakes, and even the Museum of Nature and Science which we can use for photos as well! It really is the perfect mixture of nature and city vibes all combined into one!!

3. Red Rocks Park

Just outside the west end of Denver is the notoriously gorgeous and scenic Red Rocks Park! Any music fans will likely know of this park thanks to their favorite bands playing at the incredible Red Rocks Amphitheater, but there’s a LOT more to the park than it’s concert venue! The park includes a 1.4 mile hiking trail with views of the incredible red rock formations that the park is named after. There is also a breathtaking view of the city of Denver which can be a prime location for your proposal to take place. And of course the amphitheater is still just as incredible without any live music taking place there!

4. Mt. Falcon Park

Also on the outskirts of the west end of Denver, and just south of Red Rocks Park, we have our next spot on the list, Mt. Falcon Park! Mt. Falcon Park is a nature lover's dream, with 16 different hiking trails to explore. Even though this park is found so close to Denver, it really gives you the feeling of being completely immersed in the wonder of Colorado’s nature. With stunning views throughout the hikes, and an abundance of trees all around, this park is especially gorgeous come fall time when the leaves change colors!

5. Denver Millennium Bridge

Bringing things back to the heart of Denver, our next proposal location is none other than Millennium Bridge! The bridge connects Lower Downtown with the Highlands Neighborhoods, and while it serves a more functional purpose the bridge itself is stunning and offers some incredible views to boot! Jeannie and Johnny took advantage of the beauty of Millennium Bridge for part of their engagement session, which will give you a glimpse as to why this is one of my favorite spots in the city. It’s important to note that with how beautiful and important this spot is in the city, it is one of the busier locations on average. This isn’t an issue though as long as you’re ok with working with the crowds, or going earlier in the morning to avoid them all together!

6. Washington Park

Our next park on the list is the wonderful Washington Park, one of the most popular parks in all of Denver! Washington Park is well deserving of this reputation as it is so beautiful and serene. This beauty is magnified in the fall when the leaves begin to change colors, I mean just LOOK at Leah and Parker’s engagement session and the colors we had to work with! If you’re the kind of couple that likes to take a scenic and peaceful walk with one another, then Washington Park in Denver HAS to be on your list for potential proposal locations!!

7. Larimer Square

Our next location is no exaggeration THE heart of Downtown Denver! Larimer Square is where the city of Denver was founded, and this historic square has become one of the best gathering spaces in all of Denver. If you’re in love with that true downtown Denver feel, then this is the proposal location for you! Complete with charming shops, delicious food, and iconic classic architecture, Larimer Square is a proposal location that offers so much for you to experience!

8. Lookout Mountain

Making our way back to the west end of the city we have our next location, Lookout Mountain! Found north of Red Rocks, Lookout Mountain stands 7,300 feet above its surroundings, and offers views of downtown Denver, Golden, as well as the greater landscape of Colorado. That 7,300 feet may sound daunting, or exciting, depending on how avid hikers you both are as a couple. The good news is though that you can reach the peak of the mountain either via hike or car, so these views are accessible for everyone!!

9. Sloan’s Lake Park

Up next on our list is Sloan’s Lake Park, which can be found just west of Larimer Square and the heart of downtown Denver. Sloan’s Lake is a sizable body of water with a hiking trail lining the lake. This already gives you a scenic space for your proposal, but when you add in the fact that the backdrop surrounding the lake consists either of the Denver skyline or the mountains of Colorado looming in the distance you’ve got yourself a one of a kind proposal spot! I mean just take a look at how breathtaking Gabby and Adam’s sunset engagement session was!

10. Skyline Park

Found just outside of Larimer Square, our final stop on our list is Skyline Park! While Skyline Park may be smaller than any other park on our list, that by no means takes away from how great of a location this is for a proposal. The geometric fountains of the park provide a unique backdrop for your portraits and proposal. This combined with the setting of being surrounded by the buildings of downtown Denver give you a proposal location unlike any other on our list!

And there you have it! 10 epic locations throughout Denver that should definitely be on your list as you plan your proposal!! Now of course this isn’t an all encompassing list, Denver is a big city, and there are even more locations throughout it that can be perfect for a proposal. Lucky for you, as a Colorado photographer, I have ALL sorts of recommendations in and around Denver if none of these seem like the perfect fit for you. Part of my client process is location scouting to ensure that you have the best possible setting for you to pop the question and get engaged to the love of your life!
